Frequently Asked Questions

Are you a "typical" chiropractor?

Short answer- no. Chiropractic adjustments are a great tool to have in our toolbox, but we only utilize "the crack" when it is absolutely necessary and indicated to progress our therapeutic agenda, and for most patients this isn’t the case. We believe that postural changes and a few reps of simple movements in a particular direction performed throughout the day are a more sustainable strategy for long-term resolution of the underlying cause of your pain or discomfort. We love being a formally trained chiropractor because it taught us to holistically view our patients as a complex system of variables; every part influencing the whole. For example, we’ll explore how your shoulder pain might be a combination of your poor low back posture, faulty lifting technique, and possibly how your mental emotional stress levels negatively affect your conditions.

How often will I need to come see you? What is your treatment approach?

We operate on a model of assess, teach, and treat- ultimately moving toward self- treatment. We will explore your condition together, then spend ample time educating you on what movements and exercises best relieve your symptoms AND address the underlying root causes of your dysfunction; we do not believe in slapping a bandage on something and temporarily making you feel better in office just for your pain to return a few hours later. We will create a specific and collaborative protocol for your individual needs. Our goal is to create a sustainable treatment strategy that enables you to maintain and expand upon your improvements at home on your own, often following an average of 4-5 in-office visits. This means we rely on a strong referral base to maintain our volume- we want to get you better and back to living a dynamic life. While we loved our time together, we'd rather you stay painfree and send your friends with pain our way, and so the cycle of successful treatment continues!

Do you only treat back pain?

While back pain is a common condition we treat, we are certainly not limited to low back pain. Other common areas we treat are: neck pain, whiplash, shoulder pain or instability, carpal tunnel and other wrist/hand pain, hips, knee pain or instability, ankle/foot problems, headaches, arthritis, degenerative disc disease, scoliosis, spondylosis, pre and post surgical rehab, sciatica and many other conditions- if it involves a bone, muscle or nerve- we can assess it! Hoping to prevent pain before it begins- we can help educate you on proper posture and healthy movement strategies. Looking to improve your performance in a specific sport or activity? We can help analyze and optimize your movement patterns to get the most out of your golf game, BJJ rolls, century rides, running, yoga practice, etc.

What types of conditions do you treat?

If your problem is located near a bone, muscle, nerve or a joint- there's a good chance we can help you out! Back pain, disc herniation, sciatica, neck pain, headaches, muscle tightness, discomfort with any physical activity, shoulder impingement, tennis elbow, carpal tunnel, arm pain, scoliosis, degenerative spines, sprained ankles, whip lash, lack of flexibly, stiffness, arthritis, spndys, TMJ issues, and many more. Don’t have a name for your problem, it just hurts, is tight or doesn’t feel right? Come on in and let’s take a look. Shoot us an email to find out if we might be able to help your specific condition!

Do I have to be in pain to come see you?

No! We strongly believe in preventative movement screens- discovering inefficient or faulty movement patterns, weak and tight tissues or muscle and joint imbalances, and poor posture can often be observed long before injuries or pain sets in. We can help you discover areas of potential concern, and help you implement solutions to avoid future set backs. Think of these screens like going to the dentist twice yearly or your primary care physician for an annual physical. Joint pain, muscle tightness and discomfort with movement is often the result of months or years of improperly caring for our physical bodies; and small changes can prevent heaps of extreme pain and chronic conditions down the road.

What can I expect on my first visit?

We want to get to know the ins and outs of your particular set of symptoms. We’ll start with a series of questions to figure out how a number of activities influence your condition- better, worse or no effect. We’ll perform a thorough “red flag” investigation to make sure you are in the right office– if your problems are more sinister than we can treat, we want to get you to the right care ASAP. No red flags, awesome! Next, we’ll examine the mechanics of your condition- how well does the body move in this direction or that and how do those movements affect your specific symptoms. Based on the objective and subjective information we’ve gathered together, I’ll use my clinical experience to begin testing how your condition responds to various prescriptive movements until we settle on a single exercise for you to explore further at home and report back how well it worked for you over 48 hours or so. Many patients experience rapid reduction in pain and increases in ranges of motion within the first hour at the office. For some, it takes several visits to unravel the complexities of their condition. All patients will receive education on pain and biomechanics, and leave the office with more knowledge about their individual condition. Lastly, you can expect this- we pride ourselves on knowing our effective limits- if we learn you aren’t the best candidate for our treatment model, we will be honest with you and help you find the practitioner with the right skills to help you- be it a steroid injection, surgery, or resources on stress management.

Do you take my insurance?

We are a direct pay practice, meaning we do not accept or bill insurance on your behalf and payment is due at time of service. Payment can be made by credit/debit/health savings account cards, cash or check. We are able to generate a type of receipt called a “superbill” upon request- you can submit this to your insurance company which may entitle you to “out of network” benefits on the discretion of your plan and provider.
